Chelmsford to get a second station
Not seen it mentioned elsewhere but it looks like they are finally planning to do something about the bad overcrowding at Chelmsfords main station. (The local papers occasionally claim its the busiest two platform station in the country)
The second station in the North East of the town will have parking for 1400 cars, 500 bikes, a new bridge and a passing loop, so its easy to see where the £45 million will go  http://www.thisistotalessex.co.uk/la...l/article.html Has anyone seen any actual plans of the layout ? |
This won't ease the lines in my view.
Is there a possibility that there could be more platforms added like at stockport? |

"This won't ease the lines in my view." Why do you say that ? Have you ever been to Chelmsford ? "Is there a possibility that there could be more platforms added like at stockport?" If you had been to Chelmsford you would know the answer is NO. |
ERRRRM.
No. There will still be the same number of tracks, so the trains will just be slowed. Am I correct? Usually no, but is there enough room in the time table for extra stops? |
They might call the new station Beaulieu Park after the New Hall site (King Henry VIII and all that Time Team stuff). It will be sited alongside the existing A12 services and 2 passing loops will ease the congestion during peak periods; rather like they have at Witham. The expected opening date is 2015 and the budget will probably change a few times before they are done! It has been talked about for at least 10 years to my knowledge and I can virtually see where it will be built from my house. It will probably dwarf the amount of passangers using the town station because of easier parking/park & ride, etc.
But that's if it ever happens??? They started building a station at Southend Airport then someone complained so it stopped. This country is mad when it comes to pandering to whims right-left & centre. |
Who exactly will be paying for it?
|
The story hints that it is the developer, but I suspct it will be multi funded with money from the council, Govt and NR as well.
SFE, the reason the current station cannot be expanded is that it is a high level station that is positioned on a long viaduct over the town. They did make improvements in I think 1984/5 when I worked in the town but it has again outgrown its capacity. Klordger, if they do build the new station it sounds like it will prove mighty handy for yourself |
Dont use the trains much - dare I say it on this forum!!
All the local residents hope it will improve the resale value of their homes though! We could do with something to get rid of the traffic which bottle-necks round here every single morning of the week and the new roads being planned with the proper A130 By-pass will incorporate access roads to the station so the developer build the station, the council build the road network and good old Notwork Rail manage the track re-development - simples! |

I am a P'way man through & through so if you do throw stones at me please make sure it is good quality ballast cos we can always make use of it when lifting and packing over good old Essex clay!!!

Spent two years 2004/05 (weekdays) in the very pleasant village of Writtle beside Chelmsford splitting my working time between Brentwood and Central London. Chelmsford station was so busy in the mornings and combined with the space restriction it actually seemed quite dangerous. Parking also a challenge.
Long overdue for improvement but not a lot can be sensibly done to a station with two platforms perched up on a viaduct. By the way, some advice to you Steam for Ever, I suggest you learn from pre65's reply and think before you post and not just put down the first random thought that comes into your head - it does you no favours. |
