Trainz or MS simulator
 

Any preferences for either of these?

I own the microsoft train sim and find it enjoyable and easy to use (altough difficult to master!). There also seems to be lots of add on packs featuring preserved lines for microsoft. But I've never played the other one so I am biased

I find trainz to be a bit 'train-setty', if you understand what I mean. MSTS has a lot more going for it in the way of expansions etc - visit http://www.uktrainsim.com to see what I mean

I'm all for MSTS even though I have both programs, It's defineatly showing it's age now but still has a huge community of freeware/payware developers who are constantly pushing the boundaries. As Ticketman mentions www.uktrainsim.com has a huge file database aswell as info on the next generation of railway simulators currently in development.

I also agree with TicketMan, Trainz is very train set, I have 21 add on's for MSTS and spend many hours running trains and shunting. I make up long consits, then shunt them on any of the route's I have. Has anyone tried the South African Garratt sim. Of all the trains I have run, this is the most real with even the bounce you get from a Garratt. There is also quite a lot of Austrailan railways for download for free.

I believ that Trainz will gain more popular after after about a 1yr now as many decent stuff is coming out for it.

I have to say that I think that both of these simulators have their advantages. However Microsoft Train Simulator has better physics, a wider variety of locos/routes and more of an opportunity to add your own rolling stock in to it. Trainz is as many people have said a very Train-Setty simulator but the higher the quality of rolling stockthen the more it becomes realistic. FOr example Trainz has animated rolling stock which does add that sort of 'third dimension' to it. With Trainz you do get the opportunity to create simple routes easier than MSTS Route Editor which can be quite complicated!!!! Overall I think that I prefer MSTS for basic driving because as I said earlier It has better physics but if I am going for a long driving session using several locos and a complicated timetable then it has to be Trainz!!!

I would say neither and vote for a totally free sim that is the internets best kept secret. It is a Japanese sim called BVE (Boso View Express) and it is a cab view sim, none of this looking at the roof, can you do that in reality?

You can download the sim from www.mackoy.cool.jp but I recommend a trip to www.trainsimcentral.co.uk where you can find a guide to installing the program plus a look at some of the best routes available for the sim and the new features that you can get with the most recent edition.

Hope some of you are brave enough to go for the unknown, and don't forget it is totally free, including all the add-ons.

I would say that BVE is worth the download.:) I have a few routes and a few locos but the thing that I don't like is not being able to 'look at the roof' and maybe look behind at your train or at least have other views in the cab. Also don't forget that Trainz you are supposed to be able to be the 'routemaster' so it is necessary to have a free roaming view.

i have both and i like the ablility to easily make your own routes in Trainz but MSTS has more and generally better downloads and add-ons available, though Trainz is now getting there with the new 'Rail-Driver' based on the WSR which uses the trainz software.

I have tried both Trainz and MSTS, and I've got to say that I prefer the former. This is because of the better physics and altogether more 'quality' feel, like you're actually driving the train. I do however have a soft spot for Trainz, which does have some very, very nice eye candy - however it is let down quite badly on the realism front (the signalling is abysmal!)

Just bought 'Trainz' yesterday, and the bugger won't install. :( Luckily the eldest daughter works at the shop I got it from so I shouldn't have any trouble getting a refund.

I got a refund, and bought MSTS instead. I'm hooked. I love it! But I'm buggered if I can drive a steam loco very well. I ran out of steam on Denthead Viaduct. :o

I cant help help but notice that no-one has mentioned BVE - a superior sim in my opinion, which is also Freeware.

Trev, try putting the brakes into 'running' and opening the dampers! Also, use as little cutoff, or reverser, as possible.

I'm useless at steam loco's Sam, I just can't get to grips with the controls at all, and I have a mate who builds working models, for Gods sake!! And he can't make me understand!

I can drive the electrics and diesels in MSTS okay though, and I've managed to successfully complete a few of the short passenger runs.

I've also downloaded the Class 50's from Microsoft, which work fine, but I've noticed that a few sites give other downloads as well (including Class 76's :) ). Are the downloads from other sites safe and easy to install?

for downloads http://www.uktrainsim.com/ is one of the best for uk downloads, i'd recommend getting a speedy downloads 'ticket' for at least a month, it doesn't cost much and there is a huge library of stuff to download.

No, for UK downloads you want UKTRAINSIM at www.UKTRAINSIM.com over 7gb of UK stock. Use trainsim.com for US stuff. All of the stuff is safe to use - My MSTS folder is over 11gb big!!! Aslo see the list of other providers that I posted in this forum.!

Installation mainly. Or do the downloads from this site automatically install like the Class 50 download from the Microsoft site?

Some of them come with easy installations which you just double click on and follow the instructions. Some rcome in .zip files which require copy/pasting into your Microsoft Games/Train Simulator/Trains/Trainset (locos/rolling stock) or Microsoft Games/Train Simulator/Routes (routes)

However 99% have readmes which show you and give you easy instructions on how to install. Once you have learnt the MSTS folder structure everything fits into place!!!

does anyone out there know anything about TRAINZ simulator as I have
got one and I am making the TYNE VALLEY line on the surveyor part of
trainz and I am at a loss as to how you get the engines and coaches and
wagons onto the line you are making. There is nothing in the large
manual that gives every thing but putting train consists onto a knew map
Scenario.
So anyone who has any knowledge on TRAINZ can you help a poor old man
get trains running on his new map???????????

Ah, your not alone, I had this problem when I first used TRAINZ. Ive got TRAINZ: the unltimate collection, so it might be different on newer versions.
Anyway. Go onto the track feature box on the surveyor (where you can select track, signals e.t.c) there are 3 menus:

Tracks
Signlas
Tracker

Go to the tracker menu where there is a choice of a red triangle or a green cross shaped box (its called the trigger but I don't know what that does), but select the red triangle and click on a part of the track, where the triangle will appear on the track. Then save it, and when you load up the map on driver mode then you will see that triangle on the map, you can select a train on that triangle. Then load up the game and see your train on the map :D .

I would get Trainz 2006, it's better for building route and driving trains:)

I tried BVE but it doesn't work with windows7.
