Chuffed to bits!

Hi to all current members, young and old
My name is Phil and I have been under the the influence of steam from the fifties onwards. I look forward to contributing my memories and also replying to members and adding to the growth of an excellent site.
As a taster in 1959 or 1960 I cycled to Doncaster and went down the canal
until I was across from the Works. Looking towards the Crimpsal I saw engine No 60700, the unamed 'Streak', in the steel compound right next to it. Can anybody add to or comment on this? Its time I chuffed off!

Hello Phil and welcome to the Railway Forum. I too have been a steam fan since the early 50's. As a child I sat on thw railway line and stopped the Cape town to Bulawayo train just a mile out of the station because I wanted a ride on the loco. I got my ride and a dam good hiding from my dad.

Hello Syd, thanks for the welcome. I think your good hiding was well worth it for the result you achieved!!!!

It was Phil, and it did not stop me bunking off to the railways when ever I got the chance. I wrote a bit about it some time ago. How I was taught things about locos and the railways by an Italian driver. If I remembered the lesson the next time we meet up, I was aloud to drive the loco (under his supervision). I ended up driving on the railway for a short time before I came to the UK. So as you say my good hiding was well worth it for the result you achieved.
Just a short rider to that, my father told me years later that it had always been a wish of his to work on the footplate but one he never managed to achieve.

Hi, interested in your choice of nom de plume - favourite loco, favourite horse or a Scotsman with Welsh ancestral connections?

Mike
