Blue Star?
Can anyone help i've been looking at lots of diesel pictures over the past few weeks and have noticed on lots of pictures of 37s little blue stars just above the buffers  does anyone no what they mean ? |
Blue Star is one of the forms of multiple working for locomotives.
More info here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_working :) |
i'm surprised you don't know. From what I've read in your other posts you seem like an experienced trainspotter. anyway, the blue stars are a class of multiple working on diesels. if a locomotive has a blue star, then it can easily do multiple working with another locomotive which has a blue star. I'm not exactly sure what specifications a locomotive needs in order to be a blue star multiple worker, but it's things like brake pipe connections and gangways. You could look it up. There are lots of other sybols too. On more modern locos they tend to have letter codes.
|
thanks for that guys. its just somthing that i have never really bothered
to look up. as for experienced spotter this will be my 21st year as a spotter out of 31. so ECML43 i dont no what you would class me as any ideas ? |
for berwick spotter
take no notice berwickspotter i know your a pro-spotter and so do all of we,but as for ECML43 i aint any problems with you but stop being what i call a 'think your an upper spotter'!so ECML43 stop being a 'think your an upper spotter'!!!
|
berwick-spotter please can you tell me does hither green freight depot have any class 59s there, because when i went in there before there was class 66s only with class 59s
nowhere to be seen!but i heard class 59s were there by some experinced train-enthusiast freinds are they really? i dont think so! |

unless they use it for storage ?. but as for the 59s are they not based at toton and merehead some great pictures you have taken of the westerns mate |
thanks berwick, somthing ive always wanted to know about the 59s,thanks for the comment on my 'westerns',but hither green is still open to my knowledge, but i didnt like the the now 'deceist' 'ews' my favorites are 'GBRF' and 'DRS' thanks again for your compliments,

We've got at least a couple of DBS drivers on here who may be able to advise.
I've heard that EWS (as was) pulled out of Hither Green and regrouped at Hoo Jn. Alledgedly Balfour Beatty has got the place now, which would explain the presence of the blue/white OTMs and dearth of locos. Another one bites the dust ? :( |
:( :( :( sorry guys Im only young you know:o
|
thanks berwick and 'flying pig'
thanks 'flying pig' ive also seen at hither green class 08 shunters in red livery?thats explained it for me, but i have seen a couple of 66s in 'EWS' livery there?
|
Yup, EWS still seem to operate in Grove Park sidings so it's to be expexted that you'll see them at Hither Green - but I think that they're 'guesting' there rather than residing. The other regular visitor is the banana coloured Serco test train, consisting of top & tail 37s.
|
so can we say hither green is closed as a depot ?
|
Well it depends on how you define a depot, but I'd say no it isn't closed as although it doesn't appear to be a home for locos, Balfour Beatty seems to be fuelling, stabling, & maintaining OTMs and the like there.
|
well i class a depot as a place that homes locos
like toton etc. but going by platform 5 it says hither green is closed |
when at the depot today for the first time i actually saw a class 59 in 'HANSON' livery, and it was on light engine and went down to grove park stn and back ,i didnt get the number though!ill try and get it though!this info is strange but true,

59s
did that suprise anyone?seing a class 59,it certainly surprised me and in 'HANSON' livery
|
one more thing on a charing x bound train, when passing the buildings it 'CLEARLY' states that 'balfour beattys' there and on the other building it says 'EWS hither green'?
|
59101. 59102. 59103. 59104. perhaps
|
i think it was 59101,but ive heard hither green closed too,but i live down the road from it and it dosnt seem closed, confusing,do you think, and the buildings i passed with 'ews hither green' written on it?confusing world a,

the funny thing is that this forum says 'blue stars' but were talkin about somthing totally diffrent!
|
well the EWS sign will be history now. because EWS is now DB SCHENKER
|
i never been a fan of EWS when they were around what about you,and im not warming to DB SCHENKER either, what about you?
|
well i've come to like ews because 95% of the locos that come past here
are ews but i'm not to sure about DB schenker it looks a bit to pinky for me. as for my all time favorite its the old br blue with large logo or load haul |
my favorite companys
i totally agree about the 'BR BLUE' and 'LOAD HAUL' but my favorites are 'DIRECT RAIL SERVICES' and 'GBRF' but 'DB SCHENKER' are just as bad as it gets!
|
my favorite companys are 'GBRF' and 'DIRECT RAIL SERVICES' what about u berwick?
|
yes the DRS are smart. but as i said all the freight that comes past berwick
are all EWS and are 66s we some times get a 60 coming past but thats about 5am in the morning with steel. as for express we are national express. we dont even have a depot any more that closed a very long time ago in the days of steam it was called tweedmouth or 52D and i live next to it all that is there now is a siding to allow the freight to pull off the main line an let the express past |
i like class 66s,but your a lucky man seing class 60s before withdrawl,im not a fan of national express (rail comanys),or
SWT,EMT,any bus operating company running rail services does not work out in my books!bus companys stick to bus companys rail companys stick to rail comapnys, thats my saying anyway, ill look tweedmouth on wikipedia because it sounds interesting, southeastern-465 (NSERS member) |
