Longest Station on a Preserved Line
 

So what do u think the longest station on a preserved line is, i think probably minehead on the west somerset railway. . .

Pickering and Gromont on the North Yorks Moors must be in the running. Or Bolton Street at Bury on the East Lancs. How are we going to measure them.......coach lengths?

Yeah, kidderminster may be in there somewhere as well, on the severn valley

I work on the Severn Valley, and I have seen 9 coaches plus the loco at Kidderminster with room to spare. I would guess that, backed right up to the buffer stops, you could probably get 11 on each side of the island platform.

if it gets very close we may have to measure in feet and inches
i have no idea as to the actual length of any of them, they just take a short while to walk down!

I have seen two 16 coach trains with 15th class Garratts both standing on platform 1 at Bulawayo Station. The first to leave was a school train taking Boarders home to Zambia. This train did not need to stop apart from watering and loco/crew change. The second, 15 mins later, was the normal mail train (passenger train to non Rhodesians)which did stop at a number of stations. We only had 2 passanger trains a day. The mail and the mixed which was a fast goods with a few coaches taged to the back. All trains had full vacum brakes through out. The mail was made up of 4th class behind the loco, then 3rd, 2nd and 1st at the rear to keep the noise down.

This was once the largest yard in the UK and the photos are a fantastic history of the Welsh railways with pictures going back to the early 1900's. For the 37 fans there are a number of photos and some of 08's and 03's. It almost tells the story of the yard and loco sheds from when they were first built to the ripping out of the heart of the place. Even the Flying Scotsman visited the place before it was demolished. 'Oh' why did I look for it, well my daughter now lives just across the road from the site.

I think Rawtenstall on the ELR is actually longer than Bolton Street, it was extended in 2004.

How does Manchester Vic measure up? I know it was the longest at one time when it linked up with exchange.?

I believe it is still the longest platform, but it isn't in on a preserved line.

Last year I was on a rail tour that stopped at Manchester Victoria, the train was made up of what I think was 14 Mk2's (quite a big train for the routes it was taking), and when it arrived at Man Vic on return jorney the manager said that around 8 coaches would fit on the platform, so passengers had to move down the train, dont know if the whole thing did fit on.

wow, what a come down for Manchester and what was the longest platform in Europe when Exchange was still there. Hope to be their later this month on the Royal Dalesman
