New fences to prevent rail crime (BBC News)

Steel fencing is being used around railway lines to help prevent crimes such as trespass and graffiti.

Why not wire them up too!

paul miller 27th August 2008 13:19

Dont get me on this subject. Yet another zillion pounds being spent to keep the little gits out. They will just move somewhere else along the track wont they. Fences are not the answer, but then again people would argue that my answer is not right either. So on this occasion I am sitting on the steel fence.
Paul.

davat 27th August 2008 21:52

Fences won't stop them.

Fences won't stop them the little bu....s get car jacks and prise the metals apart. The only thing it will stop is us decent folk getting decent photographs.

A word to Paul Miller I bet it hurts but your piles will getr better quicker

Nice to see "tongue in cheek" humour on this site!
But ...................How far do Railtrack have to go to prevent trespassing?:D

swisstrains 28th August 2008 10:34

"piles"............"tongue in cheek".........

If all members of British society could be relied upon to act responsibly we would not need miles and miles of expensive fencing and Network Rail would save an absolute fortune. Generally speaking in most countries fencing is only required to prevent animals from straying onto the tracks.

As my garden backs on to a small Watford - St Albans line, it's been great since these fences went up (2yrs now), the garden is totally secure and no thieving git will have our lawnmower again. Thefts via access from the track all along the whole stretch have gone down to zero since they were erected.

To be very serious about this matter. I went by coach to Disneyland Paris over the bank holiday. Of all the miles of railway track we saw, many of it the High Speed Link to Paris and beyond, what was missing from the scene? Massive fences and anything that looked like a substantial fence of any sort.
Why do we need them? For the same reason that on sale in the shops where hunting knives. Remember in this country we have stopped the sale of these, because we are told that it is because they are readily available that knife crime has gone up. Why does'nt it happen there then?
My opinion is that we are soft on these people wether it be using knives or putting things on railway tracks.
No one will tackle the issues, in fact you do well to get a policeman out to you, if you need them.
Sad, but a fact.
Paul.

When my dad was a fitter on King George Dock in Hull, he was occassionaly called upon to help the P-Way gang repair the fences along the KGD branch here in Hull. As he described it, it was a never ending job. No sooner had they patched up the gaps, than the little buggers would cut holes in the fence again. Makes you wonder if it's all worthwhile.

There is a school of thought amongst road designers, that it's actually a waste of time putting up warning notices on the roads, the theory being that drivers would take more care if there was an element of danger involved in driving. In other words, not being told of potential hazards would make drivers drive more carefully. I wonder if the same theory would work if applied to the problem of trespass on the railway?

It's a sad reflection isn't it?.....and Paul M. You're absolutely right about the seriousness of the situation here in Britain...

Why do we have such idiots in our midst, ..and they're allowed to get away with it as well!
Like Swiss trains and others I've travelled Europe and seen railtracks of all types, local and main, totally devoid of fencing.......with a footpath of all things running alongside! Yet the local kids don't seem inclined to conspire to attempt mass murder like ours do , "just for a laugh"......."innit"

As a Nation, it's time for us to wake up, pay the price and do the right thing. 90% of our crime and vandalism is committed by kids, bringing misery to millions. It must cost the Nation an absolute fortune. Yet the Police, the Government, Mp's, councillors et al, can't be bothered to sort them out.

try smacking one of the little dears though.......and the world will fall around your ears.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
The Political Correct brigade have a lot to answer for!

robbo 29th August 2008 10:09

They will probadly nick the fencing as well for scrap when they go after the copper cabling

Wholeheartedly agree with what's been said and especially Swisstrains. I often watch the Swiss Railway Journeys on the Travel Channel and always remark to my wife 1, how clean everything is, 2, how well behaved people seem ot be, and 3, the complete lack of overt 'safety' measures and the utter lack of fencing everywhere.

This country has always been petty minded and stupid and I speak as an Englishman. The mass of the people are dumber than oxen in their daily lives and at times I am embarrassed to live here and call myself English.

I am sure lots of countries including Switzerland have just as many problems and socila ills as we do, but they seem to deal with them far better. There also seems to be in the rest of the world the normal reasoning to let life get on with itself, i,.e. if you stand on a live rail you get killed. It is obvious and normal, there is no need for fences, training, hi-vis, Police, etc. Natural selection will quickly weed out those who cannot comprehend such danger.

Sadly though, we stand in the way of such selection and they breed more imbeciles and so the stupidity cycle goes down. God help us!

I was under the impression that in Britain fencing around a railway line has always been a nessecity, right back to the earliest days.

I used to sit on a fence to do my train spotting in the 1950's, but it was'nt something that resembled the fence around a maximum security prison.
I believe that as someone said earlier in this thread, that it was a much to keep animals out as well as reminding people that they could be at danger if they went on the track. Who remembers the cast iron trespass notices, was it fourty shillings the fine they threatened you with?
The real reason we have these problems now is that we have gone soft as a nation, and we have a judiciary who are soft in the head.
Paul.
