Hello

Hi,my name is Stan and i am more familiar with MSFS than MSTS.I only found this site whilst searching to see if i could find a site similar to"Flynet" where one can set up ones own Airline and earn virtual cash thru flying to enable oneself to purchase Aircraft and further expand your Airline. If anybody knows of something similar available to MSTS fans please post.
Yours Stan

Sort of like a online role playing version of Train Sim? Set up your own TOC with timetables and liveries and compete online against others? That would be awesome.

It's a really good idea, never heard of one though. How does the flight sim one work, exactly?

Welcome!

Hello Stan and welcome to the Forum, enjoy.

I'd love to see a game like that!

Welcome to the forum Stan.

Yeah,I have not got the nescessary skills to set one up,but basically how it works is you lease your rolling stock until you have earned enough cash to purchase your own. From then on the more journeys you do the more cash comes rolling in.I should imagine it might be a bit more difficult to set up on MSTS because of all the different routes. On MSFS how it works is ,you have a website that you join and setup your company on.The website bank loans you the cash to obtain your Aircraft and from then on you get so much income for each trip you fly less fuel costs etc,etc..The website has a client which links to MSFS to log the journeys that you make and pays you accordingly.Your own bank account and aircraft that you own are also kept on the website. You can also advertise for staff to join your airline on the site.
It just gives you a reason to fly.
Perhaps when MSTS2 is released it might be easier to set up especially if all the UK lines are present and joined up as in real life.:p

Welcome to the site Stan. I use MSTS quite a bit, but I have never heard of anything like "Flynet" in the virtual railway scene. I would be intrested in such a game but my PC skills are not that good so I could not set one up.
Hope you stick around and enjoy the forum.

I would certainly be able to create and host the website, since that's my business.

I don't know about writing a client to log what goes on in the simulator then report it back to the site but I'd look into it and I'm sure someone I know would have a good idea on how to go about it.

The only problem I would have is time to do it really compared to if anyone would actually use it. I'd also personally rather use Rail Simulator (or develop a cross-simulator game) since MSTS is rather old now.

Stan 29th June 2008 23:22

Yes,i am afraid the client is a nescessity because once finance enters into any sort of game its amazing what poeple will do to get ahead, even to the point of claiming for journeys that they have not done.
Stan:)

At the risk of being a party pooper I just wanna remind you that unlike the airlines, the majority of TOCs in the UK aren't allowed to own their stock but have to lease it from ROSCOs. This is one of the many crazy conditions of the franchising agreements.

Deathbyteacup 30th June 2008 17:44

Well, in this game you would lease trains until you can afford to lease better trains.

Then your franchise will run out and you'll have wasted money on the research and development of said trains. :p

Foghut 30th June 2008 17:57

Fairy Nuff, it's your game so I guess you can call the shots ;)

Deathbyteacup 30th June 2008 19:43

It's not really, I would never find the time to ever create it. Besides I can't take credit for the idea either.

Although I was being somewhat sarcastic it would still make sense to be able to "research" better stock to lease as an alternative to "owning" stock as in the Flight Sim version. Ie. you'd start off leasing 142's and 158's or whatever your period, and then be able to research HST's or Pendo's etc.

I suppose the way I would do it is by creating more than one, infact many "games" - each game having the UK (or other countries) devided up into franchises (or BR regions depending when the year was set for that game?) then each player is assigned a franchise to begin with. Then they build their franchises with stock, earning money and running good services, and after so much time the franchises are "renewed" and the better players can now run the more lucrative routes, or something.

I guess this'd require a full map of the UK. I think this is beyond train sims at the moment.

Maybe MSTS2 can provide, that promises some weird way of creating "any route" using Google Earth or whatever MS's version of that is.
