What were your favourite loco's?.
Did you have any loco's that for some known or unknown reason you had a soft spot for?.
Beacuse they were the first two to be scrapped i had a fascination for 55 001 and 55020, Ballymoss 55 018 as it was the final one that i had seen to "class" my deltic's. 47 421 as i had it on my model railway. 47 484 Ismabard kingdom brunel....just the name got the juices flowing. 47 901 and 87 101 as they were unique to the others in their class. 46 026 again as it was the only named 46 (i think). Sad maybe but these engines stood out for me, what about you?. |
Hi Lee
My Favorite loco has to be the N7 0-6-2T it was the first engine I ever worked on as a fireman. The cabs were very comfortable plenty of room and they were powerful little engines, On the "Jazz service" leaving Liverpool Street we often hauled 10 packed coaches up "Bethnal Green Bank". I believe preserved N7 69621 had problems on the NYMR recently but in my day they were reliable engines. Alan Locojoe |
Some of my favourite locos were the ones given GWR style green livery for the GW150 celebrations in the 80's.
47079 "GJ Churchward" 47484 "Isambard Kingdom Brunel" 47500 "Great Western" 47628 "Sir Daniel Gooch" and of course 50007 "Sir Edward Elgar" On the subject of green locos I also had a liking for the B.R. green Class 40's 106 and 122. |
Hi John,
I forgot about 47079, was that not named George Jackson Churchwood and then later appeared as GJ Churchwood?. |

I do remember seeing it as "George Jackson Churchward" when it was in blue livery. I think it must have been shortened to "G J Churchward" when they cast the new brass GW-style nameplates for it in the mid 80's.
Here it is at Old Oak Common in 1985 with one of your favourites:) Attachment 176 Attachment 177 |
My favourite loco is preferably one that works. From a drivers perspective of course:p

Ha! You can guess my favourite from my forum i.d.
But do I mean steam or diesel? Let's just say I consider myself a western man, much preferable to the midland! |

Would you care to say why 47549 was your favourite?:) |
The one that me and my circle of railway minded friends had a soft spot for for was a Class 11 shunter.
12121 spent its entire life in Hull as far as I know, initially allocated to Alex Dock, then Dairycoates and finally to Botanic Gardens. It stayed at Botanic for two or three years, never doing any work and seemingly rusted to the rails. BG never seemed the same place once 12121 was dragged away to be dismantled. :( I also had a soft spot for the Hull 03's. What I'd give to see one of them on station pilot duties at Paragon again!!! Nice idea for a thread Lee! |

Encouraged by my lead, several others then came out of the closet & as a rule, chose named 47/4's from Old Oak Common as our pet loco's. My choice, 47510 Fair Rosamund was soon transferred to scotland as a push-pull 47/7. Therefore, to be different, I then chose 47549 as it didn't carry a name. No great surprise to find that about 18 months later it was named Royal Mail & about 3 years later was transferred to scotland! It's gone now, courtesy of a 'heavy shunt' at Peterborough. But I had great fun (& even more frustration) chasing it around the country. |
Thanks Dave,
Wasn't 47549 one of the few 47's ever to travel by sea?;) |

Another favourite of mine was Python, copped and cabbed at Sheffield Midland around 1972. Happy days! :) |

I have always had a soft spot for 55003 Meld, she was the first Deltic I saw, I was parked up at Abington just off the A74 when she went North at full speed that is a sight and sound that will remain with me forever. Chris.

I'd love to be able to remember the first Deltic I saw. It was probably on my first train spotting trip away from Hull, which would have been York. But even worse is the fact that I cannot recall the identity of the last Deltic I saw to complete the class. I can recall the occassion, it was on a northbound train at Doncaster and I vividly recall turning to my mate and cheering as I realised I'd classed them. I just cannot remember which one it was. I've got an idea that it was Crepello, but I'm not sure if I just think it was that one as that particular loco eluded my mate for years, so I could just be getting confused.
Bloody rubbish memory banks!!!! |
Obiviously 35022 Holland America Line.:D
But I would spend my second spare million Quid on recreating the LBSCR BalticTank 333 Rememberance (in Umber, of course) |
Now there is a thought for a new build: a baltic tank. My choice would be the L&Y one!

60049 Galtee More was my favourite steam locomotive, mainly because as a 10 year old boy I stood at the side of it in Nottinhgam Victoria Station and I thought I was in paradise. I did'nt even know that engines came in green. The only ones I saw day in day out came in all shades of black.
My favourite diesels must be the Deltics and St Paddy in particular. I remember going to Doncaster and seeing her rotting away at the side of the works, sad really, I never thought I would feel like that about a diesel. Isambard Kingdom Brunel was a favourite as well, something about the named 47's made them special. The 47's that Stratford did for the Silver Jubilee where great. I used to see one most days on the Harwich to Liverpool boat train when I lived at the side of the Erewash Valley line just north of Trowell Junction. |
