Tinsley marshalling yard

Hi does anybody know if tinsley marshalling yard is still operational ? The last time i visited was about 2003-4 and there was the odd locos to be seen, but i was reading recently that in 2007 theyve built a new yard smaller than the old one and that its operational again, anyone know if this is true and if so wot sort of traffic would we be able to see ? many thanks.

It's not there anymore; there's sections of double track, with odd bits of siding, but it's overgrown with vegetation in many places, and the line which passed the yard is now disconnected at the eastern end. It's a scene of dereliction and abandonment. If there's a new yard, it's not here. Have a look on the Google Map - it's hard to even FIND it with aerial views!

Hi Dave ive just watched a couple of videos on youtube about the subject and yes your right most of its not there anymore but they have built a brand new building which is supposed to be a freight building of some sort and right next to it they have relaid some new sections of track and theres a couple of resident shunters housed there, and ive also heard that there is the odd loco there either dropping off or picking up,i think ill make a trip down there in the next couple of weeks to see for myself.

Dave Rowland 2nd January 2010 19:02

I've just fiddled around on Google and found some photos etc; it seems to be quite a sizeable freight building, but rail tracks don't enter the building. There appear to be a couple of sidings, but little else. Let us know what you find!
Here's a couple of references:

I've just watched the YouTube Tinsley Pt 1 - great bit of film; 48111 - WATCH THIS - there's a bunch of mechanical horses pottering about, in a variety of colours! Chunk76, welcome to the forum; I see you're FROM Sheffield; I spent a week with friends there in August, nice place. You might be interested to see some of the photos I took. I travelled the whole tramway system, and visited Kelham Island Museum; ou can find the photos at these locations:

Yes, brilliant thank you. By the way, has anyone ever watched the video titled FREIGHT ? I bought it from a shop at a heritage railway quite some time ago now, I dont know if it is out on disc, but it is a very interesting film and very well worth watching.Apparently it was a popular video within the enthuiasts world and I had to wait for my tape because they had run out of stock, they went like "hot cakes" at the time.

48111 - have you watched the second YouTube video on Tinsley Marshalling Yard? There's EVEN MORE mechanical horses on there! No, I haven't seen the video you mentioned, I've never been able to afford such luxuries - I've always given my financial priority to seeing trains 'in the flesh', if that's an apt term... (APT?)
:)

48111 3rd January 2010 06:25

This is an interesting thread, well worth carrying on, because with the ending of "Goods trains" as we knew them and no more loose coupled trains, no more brakevan trains, the kind of Goods trains that were at one time, part of everyday life, no more can you hear the "clangning of buffers in a yard, no more can you see Hump shunting, all that has gone now, just memories, unless you can find a heritage railway that runs trains with brakevans of course.
But in general it has gone, some of the yards that I worked in to are no longer there, and if they are, then they are derelict and overgrown, or have supermarkets or car parks built on them. I know of one in particular that you can now walk round a "superstore" and do your shopping on the floor that used to hold lines of wagons and be a very busy Goods Yard !!

Come on chaps, lets talk a bit more about this very interesting subject, some of you must know of yards that were once busy locations and now are simply no more !

On the subject of "superstores" though, did you know that Asda have more stores on former railway land than Tesco, having said that, Tesco do have a store and car park on part of the old Wolverton works.

Well Dave, I would anything to be able to go and see trains "in the flesh" If I WAS WELL ENOUGH, which sadly I am not, I do intend to do something this new year, even if it is a visit just once to a preserved railway, I have to live with my videos and discs, books and of course this forum.

Just keep taking the tablets.

The new (?) 'Covent Garden' built on the site of the huge 70A Nine Elms MPD springs readily to mind, not forgetting that this was also adjoined by the original LSWR Works until replaced by Eastleigh. I visited 70A on two occasions in 1966 - a bit too late, really, and never had a camera with me, sadly. Red Bank sidings in Manchester was once a busy yard full of parcels vans & coaching stock, now it's mostly new houses, I think. What USED to be B & Q at Portsmouth & Southsea is built on part of the northern half of the low level station; this was the site of the original engine shed at Portsmouth before Fratton shed was built. There was still a turntable there until the 60's, next to which was a wooden hut which was used in later years of its existence by Portsmouth Model Railway Society (or somesuch); I believe that the same society now has use of the signalbox at Portsmouth Harbour. At least it's 'keeping it in the family'. Well, sort of...

pre65 4th January 2010 11:31

I was thinking the other day.

We all probably have a selection of DVD or Videos on interesting railway matters, and probably don't watch them very often.

How about lending them out to forum regulars ?

If I list the few I have then I post to chap A, and when he's viewed it he posts to chap B and so on. When no one else wants it then it's returned to the originator.

Or would it get too complicated, or violate any copyright agreements ?

chunk76 4th January 2010 13:05

Hi pre65 that sounds like a great idea but the only problem i can see with it is can we trust other people to pass them on ? im not trying to say everybodys a theif or anything like that but could we gurantee everyone to be honest ?

Title - FREIGHT The history of Railfreight during nationalisation 1948-1985.

...........................................
There is no first published date on it anywhere.

So if you cant find it let me know, e mail me or "PM" me and give me your address and you can borrow this one not a problem.
Only too glad to help.

Well pre65, that is a wonderful idea, and I would gladly participate, I do understand of course that it would be done on trust, but I am sure something could be worked out.

What a smashing idea, I love helping anyone and it would be good to let people borrow some of my "video libabry", perhaps we can "get our heads together" and come up with some kind of "lending conditions", what do you think ?

After all the RCTS has a libary and so does one or two railway groups, so why not us ?

What do YOU think ADMIN ???????

I will gladly get involved in this.
Anyone want a chat about it, please e mail me and I will give you my phone number for a "chat on the old dog and bone".

This is an interesting thread.......

In Leeds, the Crown point retail park(over the road from Tetleys brewery) is built on a former goods yard. If you look on google maps you can still see the cutting that leaves the existing line between Holbeck and Stourton.
Still in Leeds, Stourton shed, there is now an engineering factory and a Cemex cement plant. This is the opposite side of the mainline from the FLT.
