Right, I have been asked to create a page on wikipedia on the line.
Well, as there is already a page on the Macclesfield, Bollington and Marple railway, I have added a section under present day use.
What do you think?
Should I put anything more?

pre65 7th October 2009 09:45

This is the Wikipedia site mentioned in the previous post.

In my opinion you should take it off at least until you get firm decision from the council, why do I think this, well for one as far as I can tell you still have'nt gone public with this scheme, and if I was a resident of the area I would like to find out they were planning to build a railway on my doorstep through official channels and not an internet reference site.

steam for ever 7th October 2009 18:06

I understand what you are on about.
I have contacted the local newspapers about it but nothing has come of it.
They say that my letter was not receiced, so maybe it has been lost in the system.
Anyway I am asking quite a few people about it.
Most are local enthusiasts and believe me there's a lot of them!
You are right and I will try to go on a wider scale to the public.
We hope a survey of all the residents should do, but it is all about cost at this stage.

steam for ever 8th October 2009 16:33

I think that this is quite important.

I have got loads of track now.
I am not sure how much as I am going to stocktake soon.
I cannot beleive the state of the lindow moss peat line.
The peat has preserved the track perfectly.
The line did only close in 1987 however.

Just walked the route as the site, although still working occasionaly, is open completely for public access ant there as several paths.
I often take a walk down the trackbed betwwen the sheds and sidings to the other parts of the network.

The line does not have a page on wikipedia so I will give you some info now so we can fully understand where our track is comming from.

Between the sheds and sidings to the main netwok junction the track has been lifted, but there is most of the sleepers still in place.
The track missing from here forms a nearby fence.
At the junction there is many other lines comming away from the main line, some of which have been obliterated completely to dig more peat.

About half of the network lies there still so we have enough track around the site to get from our new station to over the viaduct, with a line speed of 10mph.

There may be much more track lying on the old branch that heads in the direction of morely green but stops somewhere short.
If you wish to go
it is a nice place, but be carefull of workings if they are happening.

Possibly one of the most important moments has happened.
As well as Lord millett, we now have Lord Finney!
Lord Finney is a member of my family who I do not have very good contact with, but I spoke to him the other day and he agrees to give his full support.
It does depend on his health however.
As my great, great uncle you can imagine that things get a bit tiresome, but we are greatful for his support now.
lords now.
As you can guess I'm a bit posh!:D:D

If you don't recognise Lord finney, the family used to own Fulshaw hall in cheshire until it was sold to ICI and is now with royal london.

Look up the finneys on the web.
If you find the complete family tree with samual finney on it, I am on it towards the Bottom.
It is in the cheshire line.

Try an attachment of fulshw hall.
Thats it "Finney of Fulshaw Hall".

swisstrains 19th October 2009 10:32

I'm impressed!!!
Will Lord Finney be joining the forum?
If so I hope he has more luck with his computer than Lord Millett did. We were so looking forward to his posts.

locojoe 19th October 2009 11:42

When and if Lord Finney joins Railway Forum do we have to call him Your Lordship or what.

Tony 19th October 2009 21:03

Lindow Moss? Where is it? Have you bought the track? What with? Where are you going to transport and store it?

steam for ever 20th October 2009 18:22

Right a few things.
Lord Finney is often not well enough bless him and does not have a computer at all.
Lord Millett has joined except the activation code never arrived.

Lindow Moss is just outside of wilmslow, near manchester airport.
Bought the track? Well now that a lot of the peat works is becomming paths, the track is unwanted so they were happy for us to take it.
How did I transport it?
I carried it for a bit which hurt so I got a wheel barrow.
Yes it took a while!:D
We have not got all of it, only about 100 yards at the moment.
Oh and did I mention that one day in the distant future I will get the title of Lord of the land, but that will be a long time in the future.
There is at least 4 people in line before me!:D

steam for ever 24th October 2009 19:50

Right guys a bit of an update.
Just been mooching round the web for materials that cannot be found at Lindow moss.
So far I have been looking at brick types for structures.
What do you think would look best for the railway's buildings that are planned?
Cheshire brick is in consideration so far and so is accrington.
I have also been locating original railway benches which would fit well with the area.
For this I have found 2 benches from the original line!

steam for ever 26th October 2009 18:34

Got to act fast!

Today I took another walk down to fetch some track and it seems we have a bit of a problem.
As conservationists are quite rightly trying to put a stop to the workings at lindow moss and the council has given them notice, they are now digging it up faster than they ever have done, ground level there has gone down by 8 feet.

In case they start ripping up the railway as an attempt to get more peat underneath, I have to act quick.
So tomorro we are driving the car up in an attempt to salvage as much as we can.
The future of the project is in a bit of jeopardy!
I hope we can either retrive enough track for the first phase or stop the destruction.
I am going down to wilmslow library not far away to find a map of the network as some lines are now overgrown and are hard to find.
I need to consult our two lords about this and see what we can do.
The area where the famous Lindow man was found is also in the firing line.
Something has to be done and fast!

steam for ever 27th October 2009 11:19

Just a quick message.
I have just created a public social group on this subject as to free up the forum and let some other discussions take place.
I realise I am not being that fair so that is where the discusssion can continue.
You can find it on my public profile.
Its for everyone.

pre65 27th October 2009 16:50

I think it would be less complicated to just keep things as they were.

Just post when there is something actually worth talking about.

steam for ever 27th October 2009 19:13

OK then, shall I remove it?

pre65 27th October 2009 19:36

Well it's your decision.

I was only expressing an opinion.

What do other members think ?

locojoe 27th October 2009 19:54

I think this thread should be in the derailed forum under good jokes.

steam for ever 27th October 2009 21:03

Well I do admit sometimes I sleep type, but it is not going that badly locojoe.
That is apart from the track crisis that occured yesterday.
If you remember it was in derailed, but it has slowly materialised into something that is becoming a reality and was quite rightly moved into narrow gauge.

Again I will simplify.
We decided on a railway a while back whilst walking the route.
Then we contacted the council about a possible project.
We have heard that a decision is still being worked out.
We have planned 4 stages.
I have started to collect track.
Now we have a problem: the track could be ripped up from the peat site and totally obliterated, setting back the project if not destroying it if I cannot get enough track.
At present there is enough for about phase 1.
I am doing my very best.

JEB-245584/2 27th October 2009 21:18

Hi SFE, I was talking with somebody who has connections with SMBC this week and has far has he knows they are not aware of this project.
Are you able to give any information on this news.

steam for ever 27th October 2009 21:41

SMBC are in a different area may I say, I have given them a ring but no one seems to be home.
My emails gone a bit haywire too, says the host cannot be found or something.
I will send a letter to both councils tomorrow morning.
If you see this chap again could you mention that a letter is being sent.
Just hope the postal strike ends.:D

JEB-245584/2 27th October 2009 22:14

True SMBC are the adjacent council to East Cheshire Council but from what I have been told they own/manage the Midlewood Way from Middlewood to Marple so I'am pretty sure they will have a big say in what can or can't be done with a public footpath.
Also what is the legal ground on converting a part of the national cycle route back to a railway?

steam for ever 28th October 2009 11:09

Yes I have just had a look at the revised maps.
As cheshire east is only a few months old we realised that incorporated many other smaller councils.
Marple is in the stockport area, but we felt it would be a whole lot simpler to have the path under one council.
That is not our choice though.
The boundry is at middlewood station (or low level), so after that permission will have to be obtained from SMBC also.
It is worth mentioning at this point that at wyvale garden centre in Marple there is a minaiture railway with regular steam running. I am sure you will agree that their assistance would be invaluble, so contact shall also be established with themas soon as possible.
The website was going well, but I have been advised to use microsoft office live to finnish it off. If anyone has used it on here then please tell me how good or bad it was?

steam for ever 30th October 2009 18:21

These people are trying to save Lindow Moss peat bog:
www.lindowmoss.org.uk

I think what they are doing is a ver good thing in todays and more importantly tomorrow's world.
I wish to help them stop the destruction.

Toddington Ted 31st October 2009 10:32

I've just wasted 20 minutes of my life speed-reading through this thread. Some of you should really stop feeding bananas to the chimp.

pre65 31st October 2009 10:43

I do admire SFE for his enthusiasm but I fear for the projects long term viability because of the way he is going about it.

Perhaps when they actually get permission from the track owners to go ahead with the project credibility will be restored.

Being "posh", having titled relatives and unbounded enthusiasm is not enough to overcome what seems to be a very "naive" approach to a gigantic task.

I don't think it is bananas some of us are dishing out,I would call it allowing the user to borrow a excavator to keep digging a bigger hole of which to get out of.

Pre65, Going off the evidence of this weeks post, and when this thread first started I think you should add youthful to naive.

SFE,How about coming clean and admitting this scheme is a non-starter,except for your own personal dream?
Why do I state this, well I for one have being doing a little bit of research and I will keep my findings private for the moment but suffice to say you stand a better chance of platting sawdust then ever opening this line.
No offence or anything personal towards you SFE,but lets do a reality check and close this thread.

Cheers John

I would like SFE to come clean about himself ! Something about this person and his (her ?) pet project is very wrong I feel. Some of the background information given just does not check out.

Unless we can be convinced I suggest the whole thread be scrapped.

I rather think that what we've got here is the equivalent of a 5-year old who's gone to a jumble sale with 10p, hoping to return home with all the neccessary items to build a full size working replica of the Starship Enterprise, complete with crew & instruction manual....
:)

Perhaps it's time this thread was closed while the mods had a bit of a chinwag. :)
