I used to do that myself when I was a lad, it's really good fun.

At around the time that the last of the slam door stock was withdrawn, NR removed the drivers' rulebook requirement to "sound your horn whilst entering or leaving a station when a train is standing on an adjacent line".

It must have saved countless people's lives over the years.

I expect that like me, most of the drivers on here have come close to hitting someone who was leaning out of a train window. :eek:

It's a heart-stopping experience.

I always wore goggles especially in steam days:)
