At Saltley it consisted of a good soaking from a boiler washout hose! Took them a while to catch me out, by using a decoy holding a hose. I tried to escape by climbing onto the footplate of the nearest loco in three shed, but when I got off the other side there was someone else waiting for me!
Didn`t take long to dry out though, just climb on the nearest prepared engine, and dry off in front of the fire. I don`t think the H&S executive would be too impressed by what went on these days! Regards Mike.

They used to leave a smouldering cloth in the shanty to make everyone go back to work quite often. As engine cleaners we would hide from the foreman playing cards in the firebox.
