Well the ubiquitous Electrostar family is built in the UK, which is as good as it gets nowadays - so I think you were absolutely right in welcoming that. More work for the people at Derby.

An alternative (though not very likely) would have been Siemens. :eek:

Wow, I am salivating at the thought of all these "new" cascaded electric units coming North within the next few years.
Class 313 - built 1976 - 39 years ago.
Class 315 - built 1980 - 35 years ago
Class 317 - built 1981 - 34 years ago
Class 319 - built 1988 - 27 years ago
Class 321 - built 1988 - 27 years ago.
Are these old rattle-traps really going to be the mainstay of "The Northern Powerhouse"? How long do you think they would last tackling the Northern hills?
When are the Government going to realise that there is life outside the M25 and plan accordingly?
