Loughborough Central Station.

Has any kind person got any pics of Loughborough central Station. I would like especially a copy of a pic taken from the other side of the bridge or from the bridge as the locos enter the station. As a kid in the late 40's and early 50's I used to stay with an Aunt in Albert Promenade. I spent many an hour sitting on the bank watching the locos and trains go by and at night I used to listen to the clanking and puffing of the night traffic. Would anyone know if the "RECKY" is still there. I used to wander down the canal and walk across the fields to watch the Midland Locos with My trusty Ispy spotting book and Yes putting pennies on the track.
Regards Tony Straw.

Hi Tony,
I know of some cine film that has been put onto dvd, it covers all the area you are talking about, including the bridge that is now just in front of the engine shed at the GCR.
I believe it has been put onto one of the Great Central Albums that a friend of mine produces for the GC. If you send me a personal message with your e mail address on I will put you in touch with the person I am on about.
Or you could contact the GC shop and ask them which one it is on.
Paul.

Hi southern there are one or two books here that may help

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/nick.wi...liography.html

By the RECKY do you mean the piece of open ground at the back of the Tuckers Road flats yes it's still there.

The embankment from the canal bridge to the midland main line was taken out in the early 70s the spoil being used to make the new junction to the Midland main line. The bridge over the Midland was taken out at about the same time.

Hello Bubble wrap,
Thanks for Your reply. There definitely wasn't any flats there in those days. It was a big recreation ground with a slide ,swings etc. On the other side of the road was Coles Cranes factory. I used to spend hours around that area. I recall going down the canal one day and My mother and Aunt sent out a search party. Where I used to stay at No 22 Albert Prom' there was an oldish lady who lived next door I shall never forget her name Miss Bebe, she had a little dog and She and I used go for walks down across the canal and across the fields over to the Midland line. can You tell Me exactly what was the routes for the central and Midland lines and what mainline stations they linked up with. I think We went to Derby once from Central and did the midland link up with Leicester.
Regards. Tony.

If you go to google maps the satellite pics of the area are very good.
There is a Pre grouping atlas published By Ian Allen which give the information you require
If you went to Derby via the GCR route you would have to change at Nottingham Victoria.
The Midland route went (still does)direct to Derby.

Cheers Bubblewrap,
I had a look at google earth and yes the "Recky" is still there just.Seems to be a lot of allotments there now. There is a wharehouse or factory alongside the station that wasn't there in My days at Loughborough.
Regards Tony.

Tony
The Factory along side the tracks was Ladybird books, taken over & closed about 1999 I don't know what it is used for now.
The building nearest to the station was owned by The Danish Bacon Company.
The flats are owned by Charnwood council.

Morning Andy,
Thanks again for all Your help. Just out of interest does the "Brush" I think somewhere down by the Midland Station still operate. My old uncle used to work there.
Regards Tony.

Yes the Brush is still there(well most of it) it is at the back of my house.
Brush Traction/Electrical Machines/Transformers are still there. Brush Switchgear moved to South Wales a number of years ago.
Brush Traction are currently refurbishing HST power cars
If you go to Google maps the Brush is the large cluster of buildings behind the midland railway station.
I worked for Brush Transformers from 1971 -1995 when I was made redundant.
