Tinsley marshalling yard
Hi does anybody know if tinsley marshalling yard is still operational ? The last time i visited was about 2003-4 and there was the odd locos to be seen,but i was reading recently that in 2007 theyve built a new yard smaller than the old one and that its operational again,anyone know if this is true and if so wot sort of traffic would we be able to see ? many thanks.

It's not there anymore; there's sections of double track, with odd bits of siding, but it's overgrown with vegetation in many places, and the line which passed the yard is now disconnected at the eastern end. It's a scene of dereliction and abandonment. If there's a new yard, it's not here. Have a look on the Google Map - it's hard to even FIND it with aerial views!

Hi Dave ive just watched a couple of videos on youtube about the subject and yes your right most of its not there anymore but they have built a brand new building which is supposed to be a freight building of some sort and right next to it they have relaid some new sections of track and theres a couple of resident shunters housed there,and ive also heard that there is the odd loco there either dropping off or picking up,i think ill make a trip down there in the next couple of weeks to see for myself.

I've just fiddled around on Google and found some photos etc; it seems to be quite a sizeable freight building, but rail tracks don't enter the building. There appear to be a couple of sidings, but little else. Let us know what you find!

I've just watched the YouTube Tinsley Pt 1 - great bit of film; 48111 - WATCH THIS - there's a bunch of mechanical horses pottering about, in a variety of colours! Chunk76, welcome to the forum; I see you're FROM Sheffield; I spent a week with friends there in August, nice place. You might be interested to see some of the photos I took. Some great pics youve got there Dave,i really liked the Barrow Hill ones,been there a few times myself,ive got lots of pics myself and when i figure out how to put them on here i will,glad you liked the tinsley film,i found it very interesting,anyway hope you enjoy parts 2-3 and 4.

48111 - have you watched the second YouTube video on Tinsley Marshalling Yard? There's EVEN MORE mechanical horses on there! No, I haven't seen the video you mentioned, I've never been able to afford such luxuries - I've always given my financial priority to seeing trains 'in the flesh', if that's an apt term... (APT?)

This is an interesting thread, well worth carrying on, because with the ending of "Goods trains" as we knew them and no more loose coupled trains, no more brakevan trains, the kind of Goods trains that were at one time, part of everyday life, no more can you hear the "clangning of buffers in a yard, no more can you see Hump shunting, all that has gone now, just memories, unless you can find a heritage railway that runs trains with brakevans of course.
But in general it has gone, some of the yards that I worked in to are no longer there, and if they are, then they are derelict and overgrown, or have supermarkets or car parks built on them. I know of one in particular that you can now walk round a "superstore" and do your shopping on the floor that used to hold lines of wagons and be a very busy Goods Yard !! Come on chaps, lets talk a bit more about this very interesting subject, some of you must know of yards that were once busy locations and now are simply no more ! On the subject of "superstores" though, did you know that Asda have more stores on former railway land than Tesco,having said that, Tesco do have a store and car park on part of the old Wolverton works. 48111
