Hello - help needed

Hi, new guy here signing in, I am hopeing to meet people that can help me.

I just bought a railway station, and it is in a dreadful state. I need to repair it and would appreciate any advice as to where I may source period photographs.

Thank you, regards Mark.

I'll be the first to wish you the best of luck - it is a beautiful building and it is great that it will be put back into its former glory. Maybe in a few years time there will also be a new train service!

Welcome to the Forum Mark.

Looks like a fantastic building. I assume that it was built by the Great Eastern Railway given it's location.

Look forward to more news of the project.

Best wishes,

John H-T.

Hello Mark and welcome to the Railway Forum. Looks like you have a big job on your hands. First I would make sure the building is water tight, then secure. After that I would see to the power and water supply. Then it would be one room at a time and a labour of love. Good luck and best wishes.

A quick look at Jowett confirms it was a Great Eastern station called Raydon Wood. I think that the Great Eastern Rly Society, has a large archive of photos which were put in the care of the National Railway Museum. Maybe contacting the NRM at York, or even the GERS, would be a good starting point.

I wish you all success with the restoration, I suppose it will be a long term project but I think there are a lot of members of the forum who would be interested in the odd update of your progress

Thank you all very much indeed for the warm welcome.

It would be a pleasure to keep you updated on the progress. I agree, the absolute priority is first and formost keep the water out. Unfotunately it has been coming in for many years and the floors and roof is all rotten.

I'd like to put it back to original, and many of the features are still there and can be retained.

The station was last used in about 1964 - I remember watching the trains from my Granma's farmhouse - She lived opposite.
In fact, the train would stop outside her house and she would swap eggs for a bag of coal with the driver - but don't tell anyone, I wouldn't want to get the driver into trouble with LNER

I understand that LNER took over from GER in 1923.

Thanks again for all the good advice and help.

Regards Mark.
