Doncaster & Barnetby are probably best in that general area for freight. Try these:

I noticed that! Over the course of 10 days in 2008/2009, I only saw ONE. You'll probably see a few at Chesterfield, thinking about it. I recommend Barnetby though, and Peterborough's pretty good, maybe you could try Nottingham or Worksop as well, if you want to travel a bit further afield.

The only freight that goes through Sheffield station itself is destined for the Hope valley route. Everything else bypasses Sheffield on the 'old road' which runs from Rotherham Masborough to Tapton Jct at Chesterfield.

chesterfield is a good station to observe freight if you like taking photo s or videoing there is a good vantage point a footbridge just north off the station
in the sheffield area give swinton a try trains head north towards leeeds/york and also branch off towards doncaster

I can remember far back i must have been around four my mother used to take me in a pushchair down next to railway line near Laisterdyke Bradford.
My mother used to say she had one hell of a job to take me home again.
So it all must have started back then.

I reckon, judging by everyone's accounts, that pushchairs are largely responsible for most of our train obsessions; is there anyone here who's first lasting impressions of the railways WASN'T from the comfort of a pushchair?

My excuse is that I was born in Romford general hospital which was beside the GER main line.
