They usually have eight carriages and two engines: one to push and one to pull.
Does anyone know which trains I mean?

Hello to everyone from Exeter.

Hello Squeaky and welcome to the forum. We know the trains you mean.
The engines (usually known as power cars) are Class 43 and are now more than 25 years old. When they first appeared they were either known as Inter-City 125's because of their maximum service speed or just HST's because at the time they were the only High Speed Trains in use on British Rail.
Some members of the forum have a real interest in these trains and will be able to give you more details if you wish.
Here's a picture of one passing through Dawlish Warren 28 years ago
