The American Transcontinental passage

Hey Everyone!

Well, Im planning on my OE once i've graduated, I am planning on visiting Canada/America/Europe/Africa and Australia,

I am interested in the American Transcontinental railway, and need some help, does any carrier still operate along the line? What state is the line in today?

How do I book a trip from the West Coast to the East on the line?

Also, Random question, is there any plans anywhere to restore any of the 8 "Big Boys" Locomotives to operational condition? It seems such a waste, a locomotive thats so huge, to be sitting around doing nothing

Thanks!
