Duke of Rutland.
If he insisted on a tunnel at Haddon Hall originally and opposed mining in the Vale of Belvoir he must be over 150 years old! In reality he is a young chap who works hard for a living (a peer in a socialist democracy) and is only the 474th richest person on the Sunday Times rich list. (This includes the book value of Belvoir Castle and the Hall). I know this does not make him Baron Hardup and although Haddon Hall is in his family name, it is in trust and any policy decisions regarding the opening of the railway would have to be in consultation with the trust. I don't believe he would be opposed to the reopening of the railway if this would be in the national interest provided that the fabric of the Hall would be protected and that the reopening would benefit the trust. There is no truth in the assertion that his family crest shows two unicorns rampant trampling on a railway. It would do the railway industry much good if the next newbuild steam loco was named after him. |

Here is a link to a very recent report from a public enquiry held in Buxton last April about the possible reopening of the line. It is over 30 pages long and makes interesting reading
http://transitionbuxton.co.uk/sites/...%20Inquiry.pdf My Flickr site now has some arial photographs of Rowsley yard and some taken along the Monsal trail along with the recent S&T work for Riverside Pete

Congratulations to Peak Rail.
The first passenger train arrived in Matlock Station at around 11.00am for shareholders and volunteers. Photos on the Gallery. Best wishes, John H-T.

Magnificent achievement!
Now, what about the extension to Rowsley? I understand that a planapp needs submitting? Do we need a new blog thread for this subject?.. |

I've just read all of that enquiry, and thinkgs don't look too bad. I have to say though, that I don't think that the government should have anything to do with the line reopening, even if that means that it does not happen. They would simply make it go away. The steam, the love and care, the atmosphere, the lot.
