Egyptian Class 66s

Just read an article in Railways Illustrated, Aug 2009 pg 76. Why do their locos have grills over the cab windows? Do they have problems with vandalism or is there another reason?

This may seem a bit daft and is only a guess: For added protection during sand storms which get quite powerfull!

I don't see how a grille would prevent a build-up of sand? Locos & units in India are equipped with similar grilles, and there's not an awful lot of desert sand wafting around over there, just lots of passengers on the roof!
