We still have detonator protection here in the UK, but I suspect it will disappear when the railway goes digital.
About 20 years ago I was bringing the last train of the night home empty, when I exploded dets and ran through a possession at St Johns (near Lewisham). It was a close call and orange bodies leapt out of the 4 foot in front of me.
It transpired that the PWay team had set up on the wrong line completely.
Fortunately there was no harm done but it scared the hell out of all of us. It proved the value of dets though.
