I did this journey last year about this time and the train was full.
I suspect the tickets available on the day will be for the NO SHOW people. But that's the gamble you take.
You could always travel on the 12.48am DMU [ahhhhhh] and return at 16.05pm and save yourself £18.10p!!!. But it won't be the same crossing Glenfinnon Viaduct in a DMU.
Hope your luck is in, it is well worth the journey.
