There are a lot of railway societies. eg SLS and RCTS who hold branch meetings and visits- but these can be a bit specialised and intense, even for me
Of course there is the National Railway Museum at York which does occasional public talks
But much of this can be learnt at a preserved railway just by getting involved - even just a little
Many preserved railways do driver and firing courses, usually mid week, at a very high price ( I mean the courses are good value, but expensive
)
