The ATSB have finally released the prang report for this incident.
I have only perused in briefly.
But, mention was made that IF ATP had been in operation, that this prang would not have occurred.
Transport NSW hope to have ATP in operation on the smog hollow Metrop network by may 2021.
In the meantime, the provision of intermediate stops on approach to Richmond platform should prevent a repeat performance.
It did boggle the brain at the time that intermediate trips had not been installed there.
I recollect for many years the use of intermediate trips at St Marys on the Down Main which terminates and merges with the Down Suburban to continue west to Penrith as double track. This to prevent an errant squirt from stomping through St Marys on the Down Main and slamming through the jack (derail) points when the road is not set.
Mind you, such things do NOT prevent us freighters from mischief as locos are not fitted with the Train Stop apparatus.
