Today is the 50th anniversary of the Hixon disaster when the Manchester to London train hit a 120 ton transformer on a level crossing at 75 mph. It was being moved from English Electric, Stafford to a storage shed at Hixon it had a police escort. Three crew and eight passengers were killed.
