As Jim says there are regular coal trains from the Liverpool Bulk Terminal (located at Gladstone Dock) mainly to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station but also to other power stations in the Midlands.
The Olive Mount Chord which does away with the need for freight trains to reverse at Edge Hill actually re-opened in March 2009.
