Freight workings at Liverpool docks...

Are there any workings still at the ports of Liverpool?? was there yesterday and saw battered old 08 shunter in two tone colours........

There are still scrap workings from Sheffield (& poss others) to Alexandra Dock. I've seen the train costs and can see why the customer is not particularly enthusiastic about their use.

As far as i am aware there are times when a shipment of coal arrives at the docks and it is taken to Fiddlers Ferry power station via Merry Go Round trains as previously said a Freightliner service also operates. At present all traffic from the docks has to go into Edge Hill to run round because the only link from the dock line is toward Liverpool. Any traffic for the docks also has to go via a run round at Edge Hill sdgs.In their wisdom some years ago the brains decided to take the link to the docks out at Olive Mount jnc , so the triangle junction which fed the docks from the Manchester area up and down was lost. After many years of this working arrangement I understand this link is to be reinstated allowing traffic direct access to the dock branch at Olive Mount. I can only come to the conclusion that it can be justified. Another plan in the pipe line is the huge freight liner transfer point to be built in the Lea Green/Earlstown area a short trip to the container free port at Gladstone dock. Hope this info might be usefull. Jim

As Jim says there are regular coal trains from the Liverpool Bulk Terminal (located at Gladstone Dock) mainly to Fiddlers Ferry Power Station but also to other power stations in the Midlands.
The Olive Mount Chord which does away with the need for freight trains to reverse at Edge Hill actually re-opened in March 2009. http://www.thenorthernway.co.uk/news.asp?id=684

Thanks for that info John bit behind with the progress it literally only needed the track to be reinstate ? We used to work freightliners from Aintree freightliner depot (long gone) right away to Bescot, when they closed that link we had to go into Edge Hill and run round and very often get soaked in the bargain. Big lift up the Bootle branch, the loading for that job to Southampton with a 47 was 870 tons ex Aintree 1170 tons ex Edge Hill sdgs sometimes we had to bring it up in 2 trips and make it up at Edge Hill to keep to the loading. Cheers Jim

I noticed a 60 at Alexandra Dock on Monday, couldn't see what the working was but not scrap.
