Greetings from Germany

Hello Forum,

I am an expat (from Cornwall) living since the late 80´s in Germany.
I have been working for the German Railways for the last 22 years.
I also work at the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum.

My interest in UK railways is highlighted by my vintage Hornby layout
and the history of the Southern Railway region 1948-1963, with a special
interest in the Bodmin-Wadebridge-Padstow branchline.

Thanks for the warm welcome,
I am sure there is a lot of useful information on the threads,
so I have my work cut out reading "back issues".

Cheers, Bill.

You have your work cut out reading "back issues" Bill. There are 76,678 posts and 28,245 photos as of 15:36 this afternoon. Might take you a day or three to catch up. there is a lot of useful information as well as general chat in the threads. Some stories from the Deutsche Bahn would be very interesting.

A very warm welcome from me too Bill. I was stationed over in Bielefeld, and Hameln for four years back in 1970 to 74 in the army. Did a bit of rail travel during those years and found it very nice and comfortable.
Enjoy the forum
All the best
Phil

Hello Bill and welcome to the Railway Forum. Last time I was in Germany (Senelager) was 1958 at the end of my 2 years National Service.

Here's a photo of a German steam loco.

This is what John (Swisstrains) told me a year or two back.
This is a strange beast Alan. I have been looking through my books and apparently it is the fastest serviceable steam loco in the World. It is passed for 100 mph running. It was built as a test loco using parts from a damaged 4-6-4T and a 2-10-2.

Hi Bill,welcome to the forum.
I often stay in Bochum at the Achat Hotel (Starlight Express) on the Ruhrpark next door to the night club not far from the coal mining museum.
I must look up the Bochum-Dahlhausen Railway Museum next time I'm over there.

Thanks for the lovely welcome..... here is a youtube clip from our railway museum in Germany. (at the 2:40 minute mark, you will see SIX LOCOS coupled together!).

Hi Bill, thanks for the link through to the museum. I found it very interesting.
All the very best
Phil

Thanks Phil, I do have also an interest in the UK railway scene, but I do not
get over to Blighty enough to make it worth while joining a UK group.

I was active for several years at Didcot in the mid 1970s.

As a youngster I remember travelling by train through Germany to Munich, it must have been in the very early 1970s. I have a vivid recollection of seeing a compact, powerful-looking steam engine sitting in a siding at Ulm station. Any idea what class of loco that might have been?

I love Didcot! One of the best locomotive sheds in the UK. An amazing place and packed full of GW's
What were you doing there Bill? Be interested to hear of your time there.
All the best
Phil

Bill Medland 3rd October 2013 16:33

Didcot was a very long time ago, almost 40 years!

I have been thinking about posting some pictures of German Railways.
My interest in the German Reichsbahn covers the period 1937-1945,
This covers the time during which Julius Dorpmüller was in charge of
the German State Railways and covers the entire WW2 period.

Even so many years on, I am finding, often overgrown, and forgotten
relics of this time. The fact that I am working for the German railways
allows me to access areas not open to the public.

Cheers, Bill.

Always find other countries railways very interesting too, especially the past.
I loved the old tram systems in Belgium and Germany going back to the fifties though.
All good stuff
Cheers
Phil

I have made a start by posting images of German goods rolling stock 1937-1945.
