Derailment Hadfield station.

On the 8th of April in 1981, at 02.45 in the morning, the Barton - Immingham anhydrous ammonia train was derailed on a crossover at the west end of Hadfield station. The train was double headed by Nos 76025 and 76027 and five of the thirteen loaded tank wagons left the track. Thirty nearby houses were evacuated, but there was no leakage.A steam crane was brought in from Tinsley pulled by 31203.

You really wanted to know that bit of history.:D

One of the worst trains going if the tanks are ruptured.
The guard had to go back and protect and the driver go forward.
They say if you got a wiff of that stuff it was curtains for you.
This train had a BV on the back because of this.
This was drilled into goods guards at safety training.

We worked those trains on a regular basis, the last train of this type I saw on the Angle at Wakefield Kirkgate in the mid 1980's.
When this accident happened, I had just completed my Guards Course, and was road learning
Sheffield via Penistone, RR Sheffield Vic to Sheffield Midland.
There are not many trains like this as those locations that took them have closed down, with a Tesco Supermarket built on them.

I know this is a very old thread, but I was going through my old b&w negs recently and came across some that I had taken of this derailment:

I was intrigued by these photos and thought I'd look up the accident report; but a search of the online Railways Archive returned no results. Anyone know where I can find it?

Some nice photo's there. That really could have been nasty.
