Waterloo station

I am looking for the history of the rail connection between Waterloo Junction (now East) and Waterloo (now Main). It was where the footbridge is now that crosses Waterloo road.

The bridge that carried the rails is still there - you can usually glimpse it from the left-hand-side of a Charing Cross-bound train. As the Wikipedia link says, it actually carries the supports for the modern footbridge which is the long cylindrical silver thing. I can't imagine it was ever used a great deal except maybe for empty stock moves.

I don't know how much the link would have been used (maybe by the King or Queen going to Windsor?) but presumably it was removed when the station was rebuilt in 1922.
A curious feature, however, was that mileages from Waterloo were measured from the original junction with the South Eastern lines, and although the connection is long gone that remains the case today. The Quail track diagrams show that, if you were standing at the buffer stops at Waterloo, you would officially be 6 chains down the line already (or 7 chains in the case of the disused International platforms 20-24)

I've always loved Waterloo, it has a real buzz to it especially in the rush hour and taking a train out to Clapham Junction is always interesting.

Ahhh I remember taking long lunch hours at Waterloo in the last days of steam and watching the Bournmouth expresses comming and going
I was never taken to task on being away from the office so long, just shows they never missed me

I think it was voted the favourite London station a while ago. A great credit to the designers.

Pity the architect at Euston didn't take a short trip down the Northern line and looked at Waterloo
