Loco hauled services

Help out a novice here. Not had much of an interest in railways since about 1988. Howwever, I'm considering an all line rover later this year, basically it'll be an extravagant pub crawl, but if there's some loco haulage I could fit in around the boozing, that'd be fantastic.
Norwich is a real ale hotspot so the Cl 90s are on my hitlist.

There's still a Holyhead to Cardiff run, pendolino drags from Crewe to Holyhead, 47s from Norwich to Great Yarmouth, 91s up the ECML, West Coast and GW sleepers.

Is there still a Scotrail one from Edinburgh over the Forth Bridge?

Any more?

Oh, does the Wrexham to Marlybone still run?

No but 67's are used on some of Chiltern services to Birmingham.

Do you count HST's as loco hauled? If so plenty of them around. Apart from everywhere on FGW you will find them on the East Coast both on that franchise and Grand Central. East Coast HST's cross the Forth and Tay bridges on the Aberdeen runs.

Haha, the old 'is a HST a loco question'.

For the purpose of the all liner, I'd rather travel cross country or MML by HST rather than by Voyager. I'll be buying an all line timetable when the new one comes out in May (?) but will it indicate which services are 125s like they used to?
Also, I'd like to get to Penzance in daylight, so I reckon a HST from Paddington would be the best way to get there.

The Fife circle does still have a loco hauled service (67s) IIRC.

If the 90s in East Anglia are loco hauled, then maybe the Pretendolino would be one to get on while you can. Apparently the Pretendolino is due to work the following.

Mon-Fri

0703 Euston-New Street
0850 New Street-Euston
1043 Euston-New Street
1230 New Street-Euston
1443 Euston-New Street
1630 New Street-Euston
1843 Euston-Crewe

Saturdays

0803 Euston-New Street
0950 New Street-Euston
1143 Euston-New Street
1330 New Street-Euston
1543 Euston-New Street
1730 New Street-Euston

Some might also consider the 225 sets as loco hauled.

Can't think of much else though.

Ooo, thanks for the Pretendolino times. Are they likely to change before September do you know?

hairyhandedfool 26th January 2012 07:35

I can't say for definite, but I understand the 1843 has been replaced by a Voyager on a few occasions anyway. The timetables are due for a change in May, but it may be that the train continues on those services until September.

Ooo, that sounds ominous.

Thanks for the info. Much appreciated.

OK Last answer first YES

But why buy a timetable download it from the timetable site they are all PDF's so are printable if you need to but of course you can view PDF's on Smartphones or of course tablets and netbooks

AND the Networks class HST Powercars as locomotives now so it's a good answer but they are far more comfortable to ride between

NYM 26th January 2012 15:25

They are certainly a more comfortable ride than the Voyagers, so I'll be using them quite often hopefully.

I'd buy a timetable for the convenience of looking up quick decisions of where to go, just like I used to 20+ years ago with 'The Bible' in my bag with my butties. I have horrid skills with mobiles etc, so I'm just thinking I'll stick to what I know.
