Just about to hit the back button when I saw pre65. Silly question, is a diesel in reserve a requirement for steam on main lines? - hereward.

I'm not sure if it's mandatory, but good insurance no doubt as penalties for service disruption can be heavy.

Plus it helps to maneuver the train at it's destination.

Some diesel hauled specials have another diesel on the back, certainly all the Nenta traintours do.
