I found this photo of my Grampy. He worked as a fireman from Westbury in Wiltshire. And I wondered if any one could share any information on the engine. This is all I have.

Hi. My first thought was a 28XX 2-8-0, but I think it looks like a six-coupled loco (rather than eight-coupled) which would make it a 43XX 2-6-0 but can't make out the number. Do you know what year approximately this would have been?

It looks like one of the 2-6-0 'Moguls' designed by Churchward and built in great numbers (342 in total) between 1911 and 1932. It is an early example with inside steam pipes, possibly one of the 53XX series.

This is a link to the Wikipedia page for this locomotive class:

I agree with boilersuit 53xx. The 3rd number must be 7 so it can only be 5370/1/5 or 7 looks like 1 to me also. There are 22 locos in the class with 7 as the 3rd number, according to my 1944 Ian Allan, not gospel though. 5371

I have cotacted my Uncle if he knows the date of the photo and also if he has any more with a clearer number on. It definitely ends 71. Thank you very much for your expertise. I will update once I have heard back.
