Altringham footbridge.

I have found this picture of the Altrincham footbridge that SFE wanted to save.

Having see the photo one wonders what monstrosity will replace it ?

PS forgive my spelling in the topic heading.

Something simple, or it could be part demolished and refurbished, the half of the footbridge over the Met lines is surplus to requirements as there is a platform level crossing to the rear of the tram in your photograph, the other half is needed to cross over the NR lines so will have to stay(or be replaced) as the only alternative is a very long walk through Altrincham town centre.

Cheers John

I have to agree with you there. The colour scheme for the Station structures is quite pleasing too, not quite LNER green and cream but not far off!:)

I like the bridge. I think it is wrong to get rid of such good looking structures. They are part of the history of the railways and of the town. When I see some of the modern foot bridges, like the one at Bristol Parkway, I wonder that the planners ever let them pass. I know that they are cheaper to build and maintain, but they are a blot on the station. Please keep Britain's wonderful old structures (not just railway) as long as possible. I don't always agree with SFE, but this time I'm 100% behind him.

I do hope my petition on the n0 10 site has come through.
I will look for it now.

Well after searching I can't find it.
It has been three days since I submitted it and nothing has turned up.
I don't know if you cant view your own petition or something but I understand it.
The search words I entered were savethebridge .

I read through the last 350 petitions on the site.

What a load of rubbish !

One was to limit the speed of cats to 70 mph.

Obviously a spelling mistake but people had still voted for it.:D

I will give it a bit more time then.
Well really they have not needed it strictly for quite a while as there has always been access accross all lines down at the end of th platforms via a small crossing.
It is a symbol for the town and will not have the same grandeur without it.
I don't care if there is improved facilities for which to cross the line but it is still heavily used.
It is a quick way for changing and not having to go all over the show to cross quite a small space.
So much history in that bridge even if it does smell of urine. Thats right I crossed it once to find someone taking a slash right in the middle!

I think Altrincham is one of the most interesting stations with both the Metrolink and Heavy Rail platforms, really cool concept and I do like that footbridge with the colours. Green is really nice there suits the station.

What might it get replaced with, I'm thinking on the lines of a dark grey and purple bannisters ;) . Or, alternatively, dark grey with yellow in honour of the new Metrolink livery :p .
