Freight on the Settle-Carlisle

Hi everybody,

Does anybody know approximately how many freight trains run in each direction, every week on the settle & carlisle line?

I was thinking of going on holiday & staying at the cottage on Long Marton station platform for a week, but i'm not sure if it's worth it.

I know there are about 6 DMU's per day, but wondered if it was really worth a weeks stay? Normally I spend a week at Starcross but discovered this holiday cottage right on the disused platform.

If somebody could give me a 'ball park' figure as to how many freight trains pass up and down in a week, I would be most grateful!

This is the holiday cottage in question: http://www.longmartonstation.fsnet.co.uk/

Of hand I think it is planned at 1 path an hour to / from Leeds.
Mainly Coal but some cement traffic over the S+C to Hellifield and then Clitheroe.
Gypsum traffic from Drax to near Appleby as well.
Not forgetting its also open 24 hour as well.

Thanks Ploughman! That's definitely worth a weeks stay. Imagine sun bathing on your own private platform, drinking beer, watching the cricket/football on telly, and of course.....watching the trains go by!

Nothing could be better!

Looks like the new IB signal are being used to good effect judging by some of the timings over Ribblehead. 17/16 mins between some trains.

Just spent a mid morning to just after lunch at Kirby Stephen, with 4 frieght movements 3 southbound and 1 northbound. Hospitality at station great, can recommend the station master special.

The S and C was in a sorry state some years ago, but during the mid 2000's a lot of money has been spent on upgrades. Knottingley Drivers(KY) of EWS have booked work upto
Carlisle Kingmoor, and swap, over with Motherwell drivers for the back working.
You have to understand, this line was built for lightweight trains of the 1870's.
Todays MGR Trains can have 1800 tons plus behind the loco.
The problems have been with culverts under the track giving way.
Its no fun for a driver to get derailed at Ais Gill summit,on a pitch black rainy nite, when he is on his own with help miles away.
On a nice sunny day its a good run upto Ais Gill, and when you get over the top, you can feel the trucks buffering up as you go down the bank
Mobile phones have problems on this road, but if you walk up the Coal Road at Garsdale Station a hundred yards, there is a full signal.

There's a shiny new IB signal at Ais Gill summit complete with SPT. Is this the highest signal in the country?
